In the early 1960's Louisiana's Cajun Music sneaked up on the blind side of rock and roll. Neither Cajun nor rock and roll have been the same since. It was all brought about by Cleveland Crochet and a song called Sugar Bee, and an eerie sound from what is known in southwest Louisiana, as a French accordion, using a heavy rock beat and some wild steel guitar sounds. When Cleveland Crochet walked into Goldband Studio, on a dusty portion of Church Street, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to make Sugar Bee, neither he nor Eddie Shuler had an idea that history was being made. When Sugar Bee was released it was immediately realized that it was a natural, original hit record. Natural hits are the same the world over. When they are gracing the turn tables in radio stations throughout the land, there is no stopping them until the people become saturated with, and filled to satisfaction this type record creates. Nobody knows what makes a hit, but everybody's happy it has arrived. Cleveland Crochet, violin player, was the leader of a five piece combo. Other members consisted of Jay Stutes, vocalist, Shorty LeBlanc, accordion, Clifton Newman, Drums, Charley Babineaux, Guitar. They had been together for six years with only moderate success. The release of Sugar Bee changed all this. As so often happens after the arrival of success, the group went their separate ways, and the sounds they created, like all things of distinction could never be duplicated by the succeeding players to enter the fold of the Sugar Bees. Today Shorty LeBlanc is deceased, making it impossible to recreate the sounds you hear in this CD. It always leaves you somewhat saddened when you realize what was created, in a short time by a group of such as the Sugar Bees, are truly great gems in the realm of recorded music. But you are thankful for the privilege of possessing them and you realize things such as this you have to accept. However, you feel a tinge of despair in realizing that this, a truly great original sound is all there is, there won't be any more.
